Digging

Digging

Embassy OFF-SITE project Digging presents new work by Danny Leyland and Bryony Rose. Using a research trip taken in April 2018 to Pittenweem as a starting point, both artists have responded to notions of local history, archaeology and craft.

Bryony’s work considers the route between two notable Saint’s caves – St Fillan’s Cave, in Pittenweem, and St Ninian’s Cave found in Galloway – through collected ‘keep-sake’ mementos and site-embodying collected waters and clay models.

At Hospitalfield, Arbroath, in 2017, Danny began the felt-making process on the rug-hanging presented as part of this show, into which are embroidered the lines Under boards the mackerel slapped, taken from the Seamus Heaney poem, Shore Woman. The other pieces on show, paintings and films, document the felting and also other poses, actions, and motions of labour.
