what we heard

what we heard

what we heard is a series of workshops that considers how and what it means to produce collective information and knowledge through the experience of being present together. what we heard will explore the workshop as a speculative and generative site where existing knowledge can be recuperated and new forms of knowledge can be created.  During what we heard we will challenge conventional notions of productivity and information circulation; examining the workshop as both a space to commune within and as a site for alternative ways of knowing to be encountered and established .

The four artists, who will each lead a workshop, share an interest in challenging ideas of unsanctioned and improper knowledge. Their approaches to these subjects are embodied through archives, collectivity and collaboration, histories of orality and aurality, and playing with the potential of the voice – as well as processes of social interaction – to question claims of  legitimacy. Within the programme we will position ourselves in relation to the material created during sessions, working with each other to discover what best to do with the knowledge we already have and that we are yet to experience.

Held at the purpose built space of the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop the sessions will also use other sites within Edinburgh such as the surrounding area of Leith, an empty nightclub, and a community archive.
