Committee member open call! EXTENDED

EMBASSY is looking for new committee members!

NEW Deadline: 1st April 2022.

We are keen to hear from Edinburgh based people who are personable, enthusiastic, committed and can help contribute to, and shape EMBASSY. Being on the committee is a wonderful opportunity to work with a range of people, commission the production of work and host dynamic events. We describe EMBASSY as a ‘learning environment’ in which together we give and receive support to one another and the practitioners we work with.

EMBASSY gallery is an artist-led space, based in Edinburgh. We programme exhibitions, performances, residencies, and events in our gallery space, online and off-site. We aim to support and showcase emerging artists and cultural practitioners who produce experimental, critical and timely work. The current committee are interested in implementing practises of care, platforming underrepresented voices, improving accessibility measures and a slower rate of programming.

EMBASSY was founded in 2004, since then has been run by a voluntary, rolling committee. The committee takes responsibility for curatorial projects and all aspects of running the gallery. We work together non-hierarchically and collaboratively to support one another to develop new skills and take the lead on project/s. Responsibilities include programming, installation, administrative tasks, the strategic direction of the gallery and its financial management.

At present, we are reflecting upon the social, economic and political landscape in which we operate and the governance structure of the organisation is under review. Committee members receive a small weekly stipend, and have access to a training budget in areas that are conducive to their practise and/or interests. We strongly believe in the role being fairly remunerated, and recognise the exclusionary barriers of voluntary work. Presently, we are in the process of rewriting our governance structure to allow the committee to be remunerated for their labour.

EMBASSY would like to acknowledge that we have been working on changing our governance structure for a considerable period of time, however regrettably the process has been delayed due to complications. We are focusing our attention on implementing these changes as soon as possible, and it is an utmost priority. If you have any questions regarding this process, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We would like to emphasise that this is currently a voluntary position, lasting a maximum of 2 years. The time commitment is roughly 15 hours per week, with weekly meetings & varying responsibilities around the dates of programming activity.

For those who wish to apply:

Please send us either a short written expression of interest (max 400 words) or a video / alternative media if you prefer. Please write ‘Committee Member Open Call 2022’ in the subject line and send the expression of interest as an email attachment.

We ask that this expression states:

  • the reasons for why you would like to join the committee
  • your interest in being a part of our artist-led organisation
  • and what you would wish to bring to the committee.

CVs, documentation of previous experience, and links to website/social media are all an optional part of the application. Please add if it feels relevant to you, however this is not obliged. Application writing is unpaid labour and therefore we seek to keep any requirements to a minimum.

We are unable to take on members who are currently in full time education. If you are currently in part time education, for example taking on a masters, then please consider if you have the capacity to take on this role.

Any questions, or if you would like to discuss the role further, please contact us via email at info@embassygallery.org. We are more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

After applications have been reviewed, you will be invited to an informal interview where we will ask about your ideas for EMBASSY, get to know each other, and give you the opportunity to ask any questions.

EMBASSY is committed to equality and accessibility. We treat all committee applications equally regardless of ethnicity, religion, disability, social background, age, gender identity or sexual orientation. Applicants are not required to have an art school background, nor any formal qualifications.

We look forward to hearing from you!

With love,
