2nd August 2023

where the F✨ck is Annuale 2023? Is it happening this year?

It’s August already, where the Fck is Annuale? What happened? Is it happening this year?

Although we literally said live on air that we would be brining Annualle back again in 2023, it’s not going to happen this year

Reflecting on our capacities as a committee – alongside new attempts to resist unpaid labor (and the presumed logic that it’s needed to make anything happen) we decided that Annuale would be too much for us to be able to deliver this year. (it might look like we just contradicted ourselves there but we didn’t, read on!)

Tbh Edinburgh doesn’t need another festival – we want to program something new, change up what happens at EMBASSY and restructure how we work with artists, paying people more, taking our time and moving slowllyyyyy. Annuale has been running for over 20 years, the city and its festival culture has changed a lot in that time! We want to offer something different and not step on the toes of other wonderful grassroots arts festivals like @Leithlate

Funding applications – EMBASSY is currently in the process of putting together an application for multi-year funding from Creative Scotland! This is the biggest funding application embo has ever put together so it’s taking a lot of our time! We hope that the extra funding guaranteed over a few years can give embo some stability, allowing us to increase the number of paid opportunities we can offer while guaranteeing committee pay!

Alternative programming? – We recognise the importance of revisiting our roots and reconnecting with our DIY legacy as the gallery begins to re-shape and respond to recent constitutional changes. We are currently programming a new series of events titled ‘Move Slow and Fix Things’ – full announcement coming soon!

Members Opportunities? – Annuale offered our members and wider community a chance to get their work in a show and out into the world! We don’t want to throw this out alongside the festival so don’t worry, we are programming new members opportunities, and plan to bring back old ones!
